Different styles of mower blades
Posted by James Prayter on
I have a lot of people ask me about all the different styles of mower blades. Hopefully this will help some. The lift on a mower blade is the part that comes up behind the cutting edge. There are low lift, medium lift, and high lift. The higher the lift the more air flow the blade causes. A standard mower blade is usually a medium lift blade. Low lift blades are very good for sandy conditions because it has less air flow which pulls less sand up out of the grass. There are then a mulching blade which has 2 cutting heights on the cutting edge, and then a toothed mulching blade. I use a toothed mulching blade in the fall because it shreds the leaves better. Also to get more life out of your mower blade no matter what style you use it's very important to mow at higher heights. The higher you mow the healthier your lawn is and it's easier on your mower. The lowest I mow is 3" and sometimes in the summer when it's hot and dry I will mow up to 4". In the spring and summer I run a medium or high lift blade on my mower and the fall I switch to a toothed mulching blade.
